Program Warning: This program will challenge your thought process and likely things you strongly believe in. Like “if you don’t turn your car off when refueling, you could blow yourself up and others”. If you don’t like your beliefs to be challenged, you may not want to attend.
I’m sure some of us are familiar (some more than others) with the following statement, “I Swear to Tell The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth, Unless I Can Find Data to Support Another Truth that I believe is better”. Ladies and Gentlemen of the HR profession, prepare to take a wild ride on the dysfunction junction train car as we explore why some individuals share data that confirms their belief and inadvertently forgets data or magically makes data disappear that do not support their belief. As famously quoted by the Penguins of Madagascar, “Nothing to See Here, Move Along, Smile and Wave, Smile and Wave”.
This program will present the dangers of confirmation bias and provide some skills on how to manage it. We all some degree of bit of confirmation bias, so knowing that we have it, is the first step in managing it. In addition, we will discuss why it’s important to use sound data from reliable sources so we can have informative robust discussions/debates on almost any topic and perhaps challenge some folklore. According to Buzz Feed, this is a critical skill for HR professionals.
Objectives
- Understanding what confirmation bias is and inherent dangers.
- Learn how to manage confirmation bias in the workplace and anyplace outside of the workplace.
- Learn how to communicate with other individuals who live in data pot holes.
