Lunch Meeting - Suicide Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention: Connect to Protect
Topic Overview:
Suicide prevention is a critical public health issue that requires comprehensive strategies, community involvement, and mental health support to reduce the incidence of suicide. This presentation will provide insight on Suicide, sharing the risk factors and providing tips for prevention as well as postvention to be able to connect and protect individuals at risk. Presentation is approved by both SHRM and HRCI for one recertification credit.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize that family members, friends, supervisor/manager, coworkers, and persons at risk are affected by personal and societal attitudes about suicide.
- Discuss suicide in a direct manner with someone at risk.
- Identify risk alerts and develop related safe plans.
- Demonstrate the skills required to intervene with a person at risk of suicide.
- List the types of resources available to a person at risk, including themselves.
- Make a commitment to improving community resources.
Speaker: Stephanie Norment, SHRM-CP, PHR

Stephanie has been an HR practitioner for 40+ years and a SHRM volunteer for over 10 years. She was the recipient of the 2023 HR Florida Chapter President’s Award. Stephanie serves as the Human Resource Manager for the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority and believes in taking care of people and motivating them to achieve their highest potential. She received the 2022 Supervisor of Year award for ECUA. She is the wellness ambassador for her organization, and they have been the recipients of the Florida League of Cities Hometown Health Award for nine years under her leadership. They were also recipients of the gold award from Wellbeing Works Florida (WWF), which is the nation's first worksite wellbeing SHRM State Council program.
Stephanie served in the US Army for 30 years and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. She was a certified “Stand for Life” instructor for the Army and conducted several workshops on Suicide Awareness and Prevention across the United States for service members. Stephanie is a Gulf War vet and has seen firsthand the adverse effects of mental health and suicide on veterans returning from war and serving back-to-back deployments.
Stephanie currently serves as the Immediate Past-President for the Greater Pensacola SHRM Board of Directors and as the HR Florida State Conference Chair. She served as the HR Florida Chapter Team Ambassador for six years.
She is a “Take Stock in Children” (TSIC) mentor for the Escambia County School District. She also serves as a mentor for Sisters Anointed to Lead Together (SALT), an organization dedicated to encouraging, empowering, and elevating young girls to become future leaders through education and leadership workshops focused on self-awareness, confidence-building, time-management, and financial literacy.
Stephanie holds a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership and a Graduate Certificate in Human Resources from Chapman University. She possesses both a PHR and a SHRM-CP certification.
Stephanie loves to travel and spend time with her family and friends.
